Sports Boosters of Maryland
The Sports Boosters of Maryland, raises money annually
to bridge the budget gap of local youth sports organizations.
Janet is a past trustee of Stevenson University, where she served for 15 years and a past board member of Stella Maris, where she served for 16 years, and a nominating committee member at the National Aquarium and an emeritus board member at Sparrow House Maternity Home. Janet has been teaching bible study for 18 years. Together, the couple established the Janet D. and Francis X. Kelly Foundation to ensure their passion for philanthropy continues to touch the lives of others.
Governors and County Executives call on Frank for help. For nine years, he chaired the board of the Community College of Baltimore County as it made the difficult transition from three separate colleges to a consolidated, respected institution of higher learning. CCBC’s Hunt Valley campus now carries his name as does an endowed scholarship fund for deserving high school students.
Two governors – one Republican, one Democrat – appointed Frank to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Earlier, he served for 14 years as vice-chair of the Morgan State University Board of Regents.
He has been a member of the University of Maryland Medical System Board since its inception in 1984, which is fitting given his role in crafting legislation converting the debt-burdened public hospital into a not-for-profit academic medical center and hospital system with a national reputation. Frank has been chairman of the Shock Trauma Board of Visitors for the past 30 years.
Frank, Janet and their four sons are ardent believers in athletics as a way to teach youngsters important life lessons. The Kellys are heavily involved with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. Frank is immediate past chair, while he and Janet served as co-chairs for the Aspire Gala for six years.
The family was instrumental in launching the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Maryland and they continue their involvement in this dynamic, faith-based organization. The couple also supports the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation, Calvert Hall lacrosse and twice covered the cost of installing premium artificial turf at Calvert Hall’s Kelly Field.
The two have long been involved with the Children’s Guild and earlier this year the group’s new Autism Center was named in their honor.
Perhaps more than any local couple, the Kellys go the extra mile to assist worthy causes. Their leadership of fund-raising galas produced big turnouts and record contributions for such organizations as CCBC, the Ripken Foundation, the Children’s Guild, the Chimes and the Dyslexia Tutoring Program. And in 2016, Frank’s commitment to the community was honored as he was named an inaugural inductee in the Baltimore Sun’s Maryland Business and Civic Hall of Fame.
Currently, they chair the $160 million capital campaign for Shock Trauma’s nine-story tower (Frank), the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s $650 million Bicentennial and Capital Campaign (Frank) and Stella Maris’s capital campaign (Janet and Frank). Frank is also an active member at Caves Valley Golf Club where he sits on the Board of Directors.
In 2016, Frank and Janet proudly celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. It is a partnership dedicated to faith, family (22 grandchildren) and community. All of their sons, continue to work with their father at KELLY—a privilege for Frank and a formula for success that has taken the company to a level he never imagined.
